In an inspiring effort to preserve and promote traditional Tongan culture, a cultural workshop was held in Sydney on Saturday, April 27, 2024, attracting significant interest and participation from the Tongan community. The workshop was led by Seini Afeaki, the Senior Advisor for the Pacific Women’s Professional Business Network, supported by Akanesi Kaufusi, founder of Siuhuu, and Elizabeth Tuʻitavake, in collaboration with the Powerhouse Museum. This event highlights the ongoing dedication to safeguarding Tongan traditions for future generations.
Siuhuu is deeply committed to the preservation of cultural traditions and traditional products. The organization prides itself on providing Pacific Islanders with a secure platform to sell their traditional products, ensuring these cultural practices are not lost but instead cherished and passed down. The cultural workshop in Sydney perfectly aligned with Siuhuu’s mission, emphasizing the importance of cultural heritage and community involvement.
The workshop featured two esteemed women from Langafonua in Tonga, Siosi’ana ‘Uheina Kalaniuvalu and Tunaʻula Pahulu, who shared their extensive knowledge on creating and understanding the significance of Tongan traditional mats. Known for their intricate designs and cultural importance, these mats are used in various ceremonies. The hands-on experience allowed participants to learn directly from experts, deepening their appreciation for the craft.
The workshop was a resounding success, with many women attending and showing strong interest in preserving Tongan traditions. The high turnout and enthusiastic participation highlighted the community’s desire to stay connected to their cultural roots. Participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage in such a meaningful experience and learn essential skills.
