Denarau Island, Fiji — Akanesi Kaufusi, the founder of Siuhuu, a rapidly growing online marketplace for Pacific Island products and services, attended the Investor Readiness Startup Training from August 5-7, 2024. The event, held at the Hilton Fiji on Denarau Island, was administered by VentureWell and funded by the United States Department of State as part of the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) Initiative.

The training aimed to empower Pacific Island startups by equipping them with the skills needed to attract investment. Trainers from the United States led intensive sessions focused on honing pitch strategies, refining business models, and preparing ventures for investment opportunities. GIST Startup Trainings are known for their hands-on approach, delivered by top U.S. experts in collaboration with local ecosystem partners.

During the event, 12 participants, including Akanesi, had the opportunity to pitch their startups to real investors and receive valuable feedback on improving their presentations. “I’m incredibly grateful to have been part of this training,” said Akanesi. “It answered many questions I had about making Siuhuu investor-ready. I’m looking forward to returning to Sydney and applying what I’ve learned to take Siuhuu to the next level.”

The Investor Readiness Startup Training was part of a broader three-day program exploring early-stage startup investment principles. The event brought together regional and U.S. experts, fostering collaboration between investors and innovators to drive economic growth in the Pacific Islands.

Akanesi, along with two other participants, Tilika Asi, founder of Pacific NRGIES Limited (PNG), and Nazia Ali, founder of Lex Connect PTE Ltd (Fiji), with their certificates of completion.

Since its inception in 2011, GIST has trained over 15,000 startups, helping them generate more than $250 million in revenue. Akanesi’s participation in this prestigious program marks another significant step forward for Siuhuu as it continues to connect Pacific Island communities with the global market.
