Akanesi Kaufusi, founder of the Pacific-focused e-commerce platform Siuhuu, attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 in Samoa, joining global leaders to address some of the most pressing issues for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Kaufusi’s participation brought a powerful perspective on empowering women in leadership, fostering tech innovation, and creating opportunities for Pacific entrepreneurs.

Kaufusi celebrated CHOGM 2024’s opening as a historic moment for Samoa, observing firsthand the dedication of Hon. Mulipola Anarosa Ale Molioo, Samoa’s Minister of Women, Community and Social Development, and Loau Donina Va’a, the ministry’s CEO. Their leadership in organizing the summit underscored Samoa’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and collaborative growth.

Women’s Forum: Exploring Gender Equality, Youth Leadership, and Women in Tech

At the Women’s Forum, Kaufusi joined global women leaders in impactful discussions centered on gender equality and climate change. She highlighted key conversations about increasing women’s presence in traditionally male-dominated industries and recognizing young people as “leaders of today.” Discussions emphasized that many successful entrepreneurs worldwide are under 35, reinforcing the need for mentorship programs to empower young leaders who bring fresh solutions to global challenges.

A particularly meaningful aspect of Kaufusi’s experience was connecting with other Pacific women in tech, including Seluvaia Kauvaka, founder of Tonga Women in ICT, and Theresa Tupuola-Sorenson, founder of Pacific Kids’ Learning. Together, they explored the unique challenges faced by Pacific women in the tech industry, such as limited mentorship opportunities and cultural barriers. Kaufusi noted that these conversations underscored the importance of establishing a network of women in tech to create a supportive pathway for young Pacific women pursuing leadership in the field.

One of the forum’s highlights was listening to the Prime Minister of Samoa celebrate 12 Samoan women who have made historic contributions to their communities. This recognition of local women leaders reinforced the value of gender equality and its positive impact on society. Kaufusi echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that when women are empowered, entire communities thrive.

Empowering Samoan Entrepreneurs: Siuhuu’s Vision at Manaia Market

During CHOGM 2024, Kaufusi also had the pleasure of connecting with the inspiring women of the Manaia Market, where local Samoan entrepreneurs expressed their excitement for Siuhuu’s planned arrival in Samoa next year. Kaufusi highlighted the significant gap between local sellers in the Pacific and the global marketplace, emphasizing Siuhuu’s mission to bridge that divide. By providing a digital platform where local businesses can showcase their unique products and services on an international stage, Siuhuu is set to empower Pacific entrepreneurs with global reach.

“We’re grateful for the support and enthusiasm from our Samoan community,” Kaufusi shared. “Exciting things lie ahead as we work together to bridge the gap and grow stronger.” Siuhuu’s presence in Samoa promises to open new avenues for local sellers, enhancing visibility and creating meaningful connections between Pacific businesses and global consumers.

Driving Digital Transformation and E-commerce at the Commonwealth Business Forum

Kaufusi’s involvement in the Commonwealth Business Forum included a roundtable on digital transformation and e-commerce, particularly focusing on challenges faced by Small Island Developing States. She shared Siuhuu’s mission to bridge e-commerce gaps in the Pacific, enabling local businesses to participate meaningfully in the digital economy. Kaufusi also voiced a need for broader support beyond climate-related funding, noting that Pacific innovators working on critical areas like e-commerce and regional trade require access to essential resources for their initiatives to succeed.

A highlight for Kaufusi was meeting Henk Rogers, founder of Tetris, and co-founder of Blue Startups, where she had completed a work placement earlier this year. She found inspiration in his entrepreneurial journey and dedication to supporting tech startups in Hawaii, which underscored her own commitment to Siuhuu’s growth and vision.

Kaufusi also met prominent leaders from Tonga, including Prime Minister Hon. Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, Samiuela Vea, President of the Tongan Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and Mele ‘Amanaki, Secretary-General of the Tonga Public Service Association.

Looking Forward: Transforming Dialogue into Action

Reflecting on her experience, Kaufusi expressed a renewed sense of purpose and urgency. While CHOGM provided valuable insights and conversations, she emphasized the need to translate these discussions into actionable change. She returns to Siuhuu with a vision for building a resilient, transformative e-commerce platform that meets the Pacific’s unique needs and empowers local entrepreneurs.

“Attending CHOGM has reinforced the importance of practical action,” Kaufusi stated. “We need to support Pacific innovators and leaders as they address challenges that are specific to our region. By working together, we can drive positive, lasting change for our communities.”

With new connections and inspiration from CHOGM 2024, Kaufusi is poised to continue Siuhuu’s journey, fostering a stronger and more innovative Pacific.
